AP STATISTICS
|
AP Statistics is a college-level course in which students graphically present data, statistics, models, and parameters to make conclusions. Students become well versed in choices that can impact conclusions, including those made when building graphical representations, choosing center and measure of spread, grouping of data, treatment of exceptional values, significance or confidence levels, hypotheses sides and centers, and sample size. Students analyze published studies to identify flaws in design including issues with confounding and lurking variables, misleading language and graphs, and problems with bias and controls. Across the year, students design studies including simulations, surveys, and experiments, then implement at least one novel study collaboratively, including application of inference techniques to better understand their worlds.

Projects:
Each year's in-depth analysis of published studies and design/implementation of research by students has a common theme, so all students can collectively explore. Documentaries often present such themes based on anecdotal data. 2018-2019's umbrella theme for the year was Minimalism as presented in Minimalism presented by The Minimalists. Students explored a wide range of topics presented in the film. The most interesting findings:
In 2019-20, we explored the topic of Happiness, after watching the documentary, Happy. While aptly pitched, experimentation was cut short due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
In 2020-21, we explored the topic of isolation and impact of it on people, for good and bad. Remote observational studies and experiments have been pitched and will be carried out in 2021.
- Multitasking ability and caffeine level are each significantly associated with accuracy in recalling details in a complex video (p<.05, p<.1).
- Phone use has a negative impact on concentration level (p<.05) and accuracy (p<.05) on assessments.
- Females and males shop at the same frequency and for the same amount of time in a month, though males have more allegiance to a single brand (p<.05) and spend more money than females (p<.05).
- Students take longer but are just as accurate at basic math facts, when working in a cluttered and noisy environment, compared to a clean and quiet one (p<.1).
- Students spend significantly different amounts of money on wants versus needs, but the amount spent does not differ based on amounts of income or allowance, nor if they have siblings (a presumed need to share) or not.
- Even after becoming educated about fast fashion issues such as ecological impact and unfair labor practices, students are not inclined to spend more on products (sustainable fashion tends to cost more). With this kind of education, males are more inclined to change their thinking about purchases, than females (p<.05).
- After viewing an unhealthy food video, students choose food options with more calories than an independent group of students watching a health video (p<.05); however this pattern was not seen in a related paired study.
